Free motion quilting is not drawing.

It's shapes, spacing, proportion, and intentional repetition. That's learnable. Talent has very little to do with it.

It's also technique. Knowing how to manage the fabric. How to choose stitch length...thread color...quilting density. These too, are learnable.

But here's where many of us get stuck. We practice on scraps and sandwiches, and practice pages teach your hands to draw. A real quilt teaches you to quilt - the advancing, the bobbin running out mid-pass, the "where do I go next?", even the panicked "this border is all wavy!" moments that only happen on an actual quilt.

Think about it this way. Nobody learned to cook by reading recipes. You learned by making supper, night after night, for people who were actually going to eat it.

Your quilts work the same way. Your everyday quilts are the practice.

So in Finish It, we keep it simple:

  • One design. Loops - round, plump, always curving, and also easy to "make your own".
  • One real quilt. A UFO from your own pile.
  • One complete win. Off the frame, every stitch your own.

Everyone quilts loops, with a little stylistic variation. One design keeps us together and takes the "which design?" decision off your plate this time.

Here's how the week goes:

Every session is live at 9am Pacific. Can't make it? The replay is up the same day, so you can take the lesson to your machine, pause, rewind, and quilt.

Before we start - Fri, Nov 6: Kick-off call. Choose your quilt, gather your supplies. I'll give you some guidelines for picking the right UFO - one you can genuinely finish in four days - and make sure your top, backing, batting and thread are ready. Our Facebook community opens the same day.

Day 1 - Mon, Nov 9: Load and baste. Get your quilt on the frame and learn my essential basting method, so you start square and stay that way.

Day 2 - Tue, Nov 10: Start quilting. A quick tension check, a few warm-up loops, then your first full pass - and how to move around the quilt without quilting yourself into a corner.

Day 3 - Wed, Nov 11: Advance. Roll forward and keep going. I'll show you the small checks and adjustments I make at every advance - because squareness is cumulative.

Day 4 - Thu, Nov 12: Finish. Final advances, keeping it flat and square right to the last row, and then the best part - taking it off the frame.

Day 5 - Fri, Nov 13: Celebrate - and what's next. Show-and-tell of everyone's finished quilts (send your photos!), followed by a brand-new live workshop on where to go from here. I'll also share how you can keep learning with me, if you'd like to.

Everything in general admission, plus a little something in your mailbox and three small-group sessions with me, live at 12 noon PT:

  • A handwritten postcard from me, in your actual mailbox.
  • Behind the scenes: my own UFO pile (Tue, Nov 10). Yes, I have one too. We'll talk honestly about how a stack like that happens, and how I decide what gets finished.
  • Friday Clinic: Watch Susan Decide (Fri, Nov 13). Send me the quilt you want to tackle next, or the one that has you stuck. I'll put submitted quilts on-screen (up to 5) and think out loud about the quilting designs and thread choices I'd consider for each of them, and why.
  • Quilting for hire AMA (Wed, Nov 18). Curious about quilting for other people? Recordkeeping? Intake forms? Pricing? Ask me anything.

Finish It is for you if ...

  • You quilt on a longarm, or a sewing machine on a quilting frame
  • You know the basics of operating your machine, but you feel hesitant, stalled, or a little intimidated when it comes to completing an actual quilt
  • You've got at least one finished top waiting to be quilted
  • You'd love to say "I quilted that myself" - and mean every stitch
  • You're willing to show up, slow down, and actually quilt along

It's probably not for you if ...

  • You've not yet operated your machine at all
  • You quilt sit-down or with your domestic machine on a table: this one's built around the frame
  • You're looking for a computerized pattern to do the quilting work for you

What students are saying:

  • Deb Bowman, All Over Feathers

"I've always been a bit intimidated by feathers, but I'm walking away feeling so much more confident... No more corner traps: I used to get stuck in corners constantly, with no clue how to get out."

  • Stephanie Parisi, Mash Up workshop

"Truly amazing the way you break it down and put it into bite-sized pieces. It clicked and made sense..."

  • Mary Lesh, All Over Feathers

"Susan is such a great teacher. She speaks slow (not too slow) and articulate so you understand exactly what she is saying... I feel like I can do anything now!"

Hi, I'm Susan.

I teach free motion quilting at Stitched by Susan, on YouTube and inside my courses, where more than 1,100 quilters have learned with me. I also quilt for clients, so I spend a lot of time on the same question you're facing: what does this quilt need, and how do I get it done well?

I believe beautiful quilting is learnable. And I believe great machine quilters are not born. They're made. I've watched it happen for student after student once they've seen it broken down into clear, practical steps.

That's what we'll do together. One design, one quilt, one week. You don't have to do this alone.

Questions you might have:

  • I can't draw. Can I really do this?

Yes. Free motion quilting isn't drawing - it's shapes, spacing and repetition, and loops are the best place to begin. You'll be quilting one simple shape, many times, with me walking you through it.

  • What machine do I need?

A longarm, or a sewing machine on a quilting frame. Everything is freehand, so you don't need computerized patterns.

  • What size quilt should I choose?

Think manageable - something you can genuinely finish in four days. Your Finish It Planner and our Nov 6 kick-off call will help you choose well.

  • What if I can't attend live?

Every session is recorded, and replays are available through November 18. Plenty of quilters will quilt along on their own schedule.

  • What if my loops aren't perfect?

They won't be, and that's fine. Perfection isn't the goal. The goal is a finished quilt you're proud of, and real progress you can see from Day 2 to Day 4.

  • What if I fall behind?

Life happens. Keep going with the replays and post your questions in the community. A quilt finished a few days late is still a finished quilt.

  • What's your refund policy?

All Bootcamp sales are final, due to their digital nature.
